Patterson, Moore, and Morey Families in Johnson and Washington Counties, Iowa Moore Index

Augusta County, Virginia - "Peter Mohr (Moore) of nearby Falling Springs land" has been identified as the father of Jacob Moore and Rebecca Moore. Rebecca married Adam Patterson in 1805. Both Moore children removed to Licking County, Ohio around 1810. Other researchers have determined that Peter Moore had two other children: John, born about 1779 and Polly, born about 1874. John Moore may have married Mary Patterson, a sister of Adam, and moved to Licking County. Further research into the Moore or Mohr family in both Augusta County, Virginia and Licking County, Ohio is needed.

Licking County, Ohio - Jacob and Rebecca Moore relocated to Licking County, Ohio around 1810 with their families.

  • Jacob Moore, b. 1788 - Jacob was in Licking County by 1814. He buried his young wife shortly after he arrived and married second Mary Dixon. Jacob and Mary's son Van Rensselear Moore was a prominent member of the Licking community until his death in 1896.

  • Philip B. Moore, b. 1798 - Philip B. was clearly part of the Augusta - Licking Moore family, but the exact relationship is as yet undefined. He may have been a brother of Jacob and Rebecca or perhaps a nephew. By 1820 Philip married Lydia Patterson, a daughter of Adam Patterson from his first wife Sophia Jones. The family was residing adjacent to Adam in the 1830 census enumeration.

Johnson County, Iowa - Philip and Lydia and their five children were joined by Lydia's sister Elizabeth Patterson and her son Cyrus in moving westward to English River Township, Washington County, Iowa. By 1850 the Moore's brought their family of five children (John or Jacob, Calvin, David, Elisha, and daughter Sophia and husband William Billingsley) to Iowa. They were joined by other members of the extended Patterson and Morey families over the next two decades.
