Eyke, Ipswich, Suffolk - Matthew Fosdick was born to Mark Fosdick about 1818 in the village of Eyke, Ipswich, in Suffolk, England. In 1848 Matthew married Eliza Kemp and by 1851, they had two daughters: Mary and Eleanor Sophia. Eleanor Sophia married John Edward Gray in St. Margaret West Parish Church, Middlesex in 1871.

Their marriage was blessed with at least ten children. The entire family migrated to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada during the period 1907 to 1909.
