Eyke, Ipswich, Suffolk - Matthew Fosdick was born to Mark Fosdick about 1818 in the village of Eyke, Ipswich, in Suffolk, England. In 1848 Matthew Fosdick married Eliza Kemp and by 1851, they had two daughters: Mary Fosdick and Eleanor Sophia Fosdick, who married John Edward Gray in St. Margaret West Parish Church, Middlesex in 1871.

The marriage of John Edward Gray and Eleanor Sophia Fosdick was blessed with at least ten children, not all of whom survived to adulthood. The entire family migrated to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada during the period 1907 to 1909.
