Notes for Nancy Anna NEWCOMER

Biographical Sketch (1896):1569, v. 1, p. 231. "Nancy Anna Newcomer was also from Huntington County, [Pennsylvania.] She married Peter Musser in December 1800, and moved with him to the village of Petersburgh, Ohio, where their family of six girls and five boys were born. They came to Champion, [Trumbull County,] in 1836, and bought the farm and hotel property formerly owned by Mr. Brunamyer. A daughter says: ‘Their housekeeping was of the ‘thankee’ kind, and the thank you often failed to materialize.’

Mrs. Musser was one who never turned away the hungry or those who asked a night’s lodging. She was always ready to assist or give relief in sickness or distress, and taught her family to do the same.

Here, too many mysterious meals were cooked at unreasonable hours when the ‘underground’ railroad brought its human freight. On one occasion it was Jacob Barns, of Canfield, with a load of ‘fugitives’ hastening on to freedom. Carding and spinning made busy days, and the little wheel is now treasured as an heirloom. In the War of the Rebellion Mrs. Musser was represented by one son, a son-in-law, and eleven grandsons. All lived to return home, but not without wounds. Her husband, General Musser, was major general in the war of 1812, under General Perkins. He was at Sandusky at the time of Hull’s surrender and soon after the rank of general was conferred upon him."
