Notes for Enos JONES Sr.

1775-83 Revolutionary War Public Service:2620, List I, p. 9, 10; List III, p. 10. Enes Jones, residing in Augusta County, Virginia, was issued certificates based on his claims for supplies provided to the American army.

1779 Liquor Sales:559, v. 1, p. 209 (Augusta County Court Records Order Book, no. 17, p. 143) Grand Jury presentments for retailing liquors without license: Enos Jones and many others.

1785 Road Surveyor:559, v. 1, p. 240 (Augusta County Court Records Order Book, no. 19, p. 17) About May 1785, Sampson Mathews is allowed for 14 months' rent of a house rented in February, 1784, for storing the hemp received in payment of public taxes. Samuel Anderson (the lesser) appointed road surveyor from Miller's Iron Works to Middle River, and Enos Jones from thence to Staunton.

1790 Augusta County, Virginia Tax List:2601, District B, p. 9. 16 June 1790, Enos Jones, four white male tithables over the age of 16, no slaves, 8 horses. Assume the four male tithables to be Enos and sons Enos, Peter, and Robert. Son Isaiah married Jane Russell in 1789 and was perhaps living with her family. Gaspar Silling and family were enumerated on the same day.

1790 Land Grant:2618 On 15 October 1790, Beverley Randolph, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, granted 895 acres on a small branch of the Middle River to Enos Jones. The 895 acres included some parts previously patented to John Archer on 15 December 1758 and 30 August 1763 and other acreage previously granted to William Anderson, as well as acreage never before conveyed to an individual.

1800 Augusta County, Virginia Tax List:2601, District B, p. 16. 10 April 1800, Enos Jones, two white male tithables over the age of 16, no slaves, 5 horses, $60 tax. Tax assessor visited sons Isaiah and Peter on the same day. The two tithables are Enos himself and either son Enos or son Robert.

1801 Land Grant:2619 On 12 May 1801, James Monroe, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, granted Enos Jones 4 acres between two tracts of his own land and joining that of George Anderson.

1806 Will:559, v. 3, p. 89 (Augusta County Will Book no. X, p. 229) 28 July 1806, Enos Jones’ will. To wife, Sarah; sons, Isiah and Enos; son, Peter; son, Robert; daughter, Hannah Swink; daughter, Elizabeth Koontz; daughter, Prusella Silling; daughter, Ann Silling; daughter, Jemima; daughter, Lydia; grandson, Robert Jones, son to Isiah; granddaughters, Elizabeth and Ledia Patterson. Executors, sons Isiah and Peter. Teste: Samuel Clark, Ed. Christian, Wm Kinney. Proved, 24th November 1806. Executors qualify. << Elizabeth and Lydia Patterson are Enos' granddaughters by his deceased daughter Sophia and her husband Adam Patterson.
