Notes for Nelson BRANDON

Biographical Sketch (1947):1634 "One family participated in the naming of two county towns. Nelson Brandon, an agent for the Girard Heirs, laid out Brandonville in 1871 and it hus bears his name. Lloyd Brandon, a member of the same family, is said to have called Seltzer City, or now properly Seltzer after a friend, Charles Seltzer."

Biographical Sketch (1992):2075, v. 3, p. 399. "Brandonville, East Union Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, is situated midway between Sheppton and Shendandoah. The land was surveyed in 1794 [!] for Thomas Bittlar, a first settler. The Bittlers, of German nationality, originally came from Berks County. Soon after the Bittlers, the Brandons, also descendants of Germans arrived. Nelson Brandon was born March 3, 1831, the son of Elisabeth Bittler and James Brandon." "Long John" Bitler and his children arrived in Schuylkill County about 1812.

Bitler Researcher:83 "Nelson Brandon instigated court proceedings in Schuylkill County Courts to evict certain squatters from some of his properties. He seems to have lost his case in error to the Court of Common Pleas in Schuylkill County in June Term 1863.The case was then taken to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, Eastern District in its January term of 1874. Recorded evidence of witnesses in this case revealed much on all the members of the family, John and Maria Elizabeth Bitler."

1850 U.S. Census:1534 Nelson Brandon enumerated in the household of Henry Gilbert in Union Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania as a male, age 19, laborer, born in Pennsylvania. Elizabeth "Fidler," his mother, and Sarah Kramer, age 19 (his future wife?) also resided in the Gilbert household.

1863-1873 Legal Proceedings:2024,2028 Nelson Brandon and Henry Snyder had papers drawn up to eject Andrew Fritz, Henry Fermier, and others from certain property each claimed to own. Summons in Ejectment were issued 4-22-1863; the case was heard in the Pottsville Court at the June Term, 1863. A decision was apparently reached in error. The case was then appealed to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, Eastern District on the 'Error to the Court of Common Pleas of Schuylkill County' as:

Andrew Fritz, Henry Fermier, and others: Plaintiffs in Error
Nelson Brandon, Henry Snyder, and others: Defendants in Error
January Term 1874
Trial commenced: November 17, 1873
Verdict: December 18, 1873 in favor of the Plaintiffs

1886 Marriage:2075, v. 3, p. 474. Schuylkill County marriage record: Nelson Brandon of East Union Township, age 54, and Lizzie Snyder of East Union Township, age 25, marriage date, Jan. 1, 1886, at Brandonville by W. H. Lewars. Could this be a third marriage for Nelson, b. 1831? He would have been age 54 on Jan. 1, 1886.
