Biographical Sketch (1954):1209, p. 319. The sons of pioneer David Frame, "David Frame, Thomas Frame and James Frame settled on Elk River before the county was organized. On April 7, 1818 at the organization of the county, David Frame was qualified as a justice, and as such was a member of the first County Court. He resigned at the May term, 1821. Thomas Frame was granted the right to build a dam and erect a mill on Elk river in 1821. Frametown still commemorates the early location of the Frames in Nicholas County, In 1830 David Frame conveyed a tract of 271 acres of land to his sons, Andrew Frame and John Frame. William Frame, son of John Frame, the only one of the name that leaves a will of record, names Andrew P. Frame, James T. Frame and Tyburtus Frame as his sons."

1762 Legal Action:1092 May 1762. Suit filed in Augusta County Court indicates that twelve years earlier John Frame and Joseph Hanna jointly purchased 136 acres1093 of land on Naked Creek shortly before John Frame’s death; that Joseph Hanna entered the deed in his own name but was responsible for establishing 70 acres in John Frame’s name; that David Frame was John Frame’s oldest son and heir; that Margaret Frame was John Frame’s widow; that John Frame died intestate; that additional funds were collected from Margaret Frame by Joseph Hanna towards purchase of the 70 acres; and that a deed had not yet been issued to Margaret Frame for the 70 acres.

1762 Legal Action:559, v. 1, p. 337 (Augusta County Court Judgments, May 1762 B) Chalkley’s characterization of the same lawsuit: May 1762: Frame vs. Hannah; David Frame, eldest son and heir of John Frame, deceased vs. Joseph Hanna. Bill filed November, 1760. In 1748 John and Joseph bought land jointly on Naked Creek, and there was great intimacy between the families. John’s wife was Margaret. The land was bought of Jennet Stark, alias McDonald.

1762 Land Sale:559, v. 3, p. 390 (Augusta County Deed Book no. 3, p. 50) 22 July 1762. Joseph and Anna Hanna sold 60 acres to David Frame for £10, acres were part of 136 acres patented 12th May 1759, on a draft of Naked Creek, east side of the Pennsylvania Road. James Frame served as witness.

1762 Property Transfer:559, v. 3, p. 390 (Augusta County Deed Book no. 3, p. 25) 22 August 1762, David Frame transfers to Margaret Frame £50, horses, and other personal property.

1763 Legal Action:559, v. 1, p. 335 (Augusta County Court Judgments, February 1763 A) Givens vs. Frame; Signatures: James Anderson and Jesse Jackson, David Frame and John Botkin.

1763 Land Sale:559, v. 3, p. 395 (Augusta County Deed Book no. 11, p. 164) 14 February 1763. David Frame sold to Margaret Frame, £5, 150 acres on south branch of Naked Creek. William Frame is a witness. Margaret Frame received the property 28 October 1763.

1763 Sale of Personal Property:559, v. 3, p. 397 (Augusta County Deed Book no. 11, p. 226) 13 April 1763. David Frame sold horses, cattle, and clothing to George Patterson; a sale to pay debts. [Note: Could this George Patterson be the uncle of Adam Patterson?]

1767 Land Sale:559, v. 3, p. 451 (Augusta County Deed Book no. 11, p. 396) On 18 March 1767, David Frame sold 66 acres to John Bodkins for £15, land adjoined Robert McCutchin’s land on Naked Creek. The land was mortgaged.

1767/68 Thomas Jefferson Connection:1077 "Shortly after he passed the Virginia bar, at age twenty-four, [Thomas] Jefferson took on a case involving adultery, and entered the facts of the scandal in his casebook with earthy exactness. ‘David Frame (Augusta) directs me to issue writ in Scandal agt James Burnside (Augusta). Burnside said he caught Frame (who is a married man) in bed with Eliza Burkin put his [hand] on Frame’s as he lay in bed with the girl and felt it wet, and then put his hand on his [erased and inked through] and felt it wet also.’

1768 Land Sale:559, v. 3, p. 463 (Augusta County Deed Book no. 14, p. 135),1114 On 12 March 1768, David and Mary Frame sold 68 acres to Hugh Donaho for five shillings, acres were part of 136 acres patented 12th May 1759, on a draft of Naked Creek, east side of the Pennsylvania Road.

1768 Legal Matter559, v. 3, p. 463 (Augusta County Deed Book no. 14, p. 160) On 15 March 1768, John Bodkins releases David Frame from mortgage dated 18 March 1767.

1771 Land Sale:559, v. 3, p. 514 (Augusta County Deed Book, no. 17, p. 478) On 19 November 1771, David and Elizabeth Frame sold 50 acres to Robert Dinwiddie for £5 on Jackson’s River above Vanderpool’s Gap.

1772 Land Purchase:559, v. 3, p. 517 (Augusta County Deed Book no. 18, p. 128) On 23 March 1772, Benjamin and Susanna Lewis sold 215 acres to David Frame for £190 on the Cowpasture, corner John Lewis, part of original tract, corner John McCreerey. Delivered to David Frame on 17 August 1784.

1774 Taxation:559, v. 2, p. 408 (Augusta County Fee Books, 1774, p. 57) David Frame charged fees for Cowpasture.

1776/78 Military Service:1506, p. 286. Approximate dates of David Frame’s service in Capt. McCreery’s Company from Augusta. Jeremiah Frame served in same company.

1778 Road Surveyor:559, v. 1, p. 201 (Augusta County Court Records, Order Book no. XVI, p. 354) August 19, 1778 David Frame appointed as road surveyor from his house to William Black’s, also from Widow Lewis’ to Col. Mathews’ plantation in Calf Pasture.

1779 Military Provisions:1342 In February 1779, David Fraim of Augusta County sold 859 pounds of pork for £128 17 shillings for the use of Convention Troops and Guards.

1780 Military Provisions:1341 David Frame supplied 312 pounds of beef for public use on 2 December 1780.

1782 Inquest:559, v. 3, p. 164 (Augusta County Will Book no. VI, p. 267) December 29, 1782 an was inquisition held at David Frame’s home about a drowning in the Cowpasture River; both David Frame and Jeremiah Frame were present.

1783 Inquest:559, v. 3, p. 164 (Augusta County Will Book no. VI, p. 268),1118 March 3, 1783 an inquisition was held at David Frame’s home about a presumed natural death that occurred at Frame’s Still House; Jeremiah Frame was present.

1799 Land Sale:1541, As his authority, Frame cites Bath County, Virginia, Deed Book 1, page 540-541. By this date, David Frame had moved from Augusta County to Bath County, evidenced by a deed of sale 26 August 1799 from David Frame and Elizabeth his wife of Bath County.

1800 Land Sale:1541, As his authority, Frame cites Bath County, Virginia, Deed Book 1, page 540-541. David Frame, identified as living in Kanawha County, West Virginia, sold more land in Bath County.
