| Notes for Elizabeth FREEMAN | |||||||||||
Family Remembrance:214 "Emily Constant [born 1873] was the only one of ten children born to Elizabeth and John Constant who lived. All the others died in infancy and Emily only remembered a little sister, Alice." Family Remembrance:214 "Elizabeth Freeman Constant, mother of Emily, whose great dream was to one day see the 'golden land' of California. When she finally reached her goal she found herself longing for her London home and friends. She lived to see her first grandchild but died two months before her grandson was born. She died the night the Titanic sank and was buried in a casket made by my father in the garden behind the little house in Otay Flats, Chula Vista, San Diego." Geographic Note:1526 In census and vital records for Elizabeth, there are references to Alresford in both Hampshire and Hants. They are different names for the same area, according to the Hampshire County Council. "Why is Hampshire sometimes called Hants? 'Hampshire' is often abbreviated in written form to 'Hants' and which sometimes gives rise to puzzlement. The abbreviated form is derived from the Old English Hantum plus Scir (meaning a district governed from the settlement now known as Southampton) and the Anglo-Saxons called it Hamtunschire. At the time of the Domesday Book (1086) this was compressed to Hantescire." 1842 Birth Registration: Elizabeth Freeman, birth registration, Q1 Jan-Mar, Alresford, Hampshire, v. 7, p. 4 (FreeBMD) 1841 British Census:1527 Hampshire, England (All Saints Parish) Enumerated 6 June 1841 Richard Freeman••32, male, coach maker, born in Hampshire Francis••31, female, born in Hampshire Charles Crisp••13, male, born in Hampshire Elizabeth Freeman••4, female, born in Hampshire 1851 British Census:1528 Hampshire, England (Bishops Sutton Parish) Enumerated 30 March 1851 Richard Freeman••head, married, 41, wheelwright, born in Hants, Alresford Francis••wife, married, 40, born in Somersetshire, Bath Elizabeth••niece, unmarried, 14, servant, born in Hants, Alresford 1861 British Census:1529 Middlesex, England (St. Pancras, Tottenham) Enumerated 7 April 1861 3 Byng Place Elizabeth Freeman••servant, unmarried, 26, cook, born in Hants, Alresford Elizabeth living as part of the staff of five household servants for the family of George Matchey and his wife Charlotte.
